After Effects is an industry standard animation, motion graphics and compositing software. Its amazing versatility lets you deliver your projects from start to finish. The field is broad but this class will get you up to speed with the software and techniques that in the future will save you time and let you create even better videos.
The Class will go through a process of discovering and learning the After Effects environment by teaching:
+ Keyframing
+ Nesting
+ Importing various file formats
+ Masking
+ Animating
+ Using alpha channels
+ Motion tracking
+ Rendering
Each participant will also develop a short – portfolio quality - animation based on his/her idea.

The first class will begin with the basics and subsequent classes will be based on small in-class projects that will let you understand ‘hands on’ how various functions of the program work.
This is the class ‘timeline’:
Class 1: Intro to After Effects.
+ After Effect’s interface - buttons, workspaces, panels,
+ AE preferences (multiframing, previews, disk cache, multiprocessing)
+ Creating compositions and nesting
+ Importing footage (audio, video, jpg – creating simple slideshow),
+ Resolution, layers and effects.
Class 2.
Class 2: Yes! animation. We’ll work with:
+ Keyframing (easy-ease, toggle and hold, rove frames),
+ Motion controls – rotation, position, scaling, opacity and anchor point.
+ Motion paths and graph editor.
+ We will work based on a simple project development / i.e. animating your logo/vector/picture or type.
Class 3.
Class 3: Learning 3D space in After Effects.
+ Orientation in XYZ space
+ Lightning
+ Motion blur
+ Camera animation and depth of field
Class 4 will introduce elements associated with film and compositing.
+ Keying
+ Motion tracking (footage provided by instructor)
+ Masking (blending, rotoscoping, color coding)
+ 3D file import
+ Lower thirds
In this class you will also learn about exporting your animation and video to different formats, collecting files and cleaning up your project. We’ll also go over basic expressions and idea behind them.
Requirements:
+ laptop or desktop computer (depending on space availability at the studio).
+ A copy of After Effects CS3 or CS4. If you don’t have it installed on your pc you can download a trial version of CS4 on the Adobe site (
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/). The instructor will be using the CS4 version.
Classes will be held at Space 88 (8211 Mayor Lane, Silver Spring Md. 20910) and limited to 6 people to ensure a good student-to-teacher ratio and lots of one-on-one time.
Cost: $ 300
Classes will be held on Sundays 4 - 6 p.m
